Since the launch of Instagram in 2010, there has been a lot of changes, from UI to the app icon, it has kept upgrading the standard, but the acquisition by Facebook in 2012 remained constant.
The acquisition of Instagram allowed users to sign-up using Facebook credentials. Those who didn’t have the Facebook account could sign up using their email address or mobile number. Once you sign up, the process remains as usual as other apps.

- Open the app in your device.
- Tap on your profile picture to go to your profile at the bottom right of the screen.
- Open the menu by clicking on the three lines at the top right corner of the page and go to Settings > Security > Password.
- Enter your current password, followed by the new password you wish to keep.
Note: It is useful to create a unique password with a mixture of special characters, numbers, and alphabets (with upper- and lower-case letters). And also, do not use the same shared password which you use for every application.
According to Instagram, a mix of a minimum of six numbers, letters, and special characters, like ! & %, helps you create a strong password.
After you are done creating a new password, tap tick icon, or save to finalize.

On an Android smartphone,

On an iOS device,

- After entering credentials, click on Next and follow the instructions.

Know about two-factor authentication for Instagram
If you want to protect your Instagram account with an extra layer of security, so you also have the option to activate two-factor authentication.
The first layer consists of your username/email and password, and enabling the two-factor authentication is the second layer, which prevents intruders from getting into your account easily.
Generally, it is a verification that gets verified by sending a message to your phone, and after your approval only, it will allow the login.
For Instagram, users are provided with a code or a prompt to confirm the login. But this is just for the devices where you haven’t used your Instagram before.
Let’s set up the two-factor authentication for Instagram on your smartphone.
- Open the app and go to your profile.
- Open the menu by selecting three lines at the upper right corner.
- Go to Settings > Security.
- Scroll to find Two-Factor Authentication.
- Click on ‘Get Started.’
- You will get two options to choose from:
(a) Receive a special code via SMS
(b)Use third-party authenticator (like Duo or Google authenticator)
- Follow the instructions to finish the task.
Note: When you select the option of SMS with a unique code, so then your mobile number should be associated with the Instagram account, else you will be asked to enter one.
Both options are okay, and you can choose the one that suits you the best. But please turn on the authentication because, firstly, it is easy to set up, and secondly, or most importantly, it becomes harder for intruders to reach your account.
